Advent Community Guide - Week 3

Week 3: Waiting for Joy

Start with Prayer

Introduction
Week 3 is all about Joy. Joy, Jesus promised, would come “in a little while,” after much sorrow (John 16v20). And Psalm 30 reminds us that after a dark night, “joy comes in the morning.” The traditional readings, songs, and themes of Week 3 pertain to the happiness that burst onto the scene when Jesus was born. The angels proclaimed “great joy” and Mary rejoiced that God chose her to bear Jesus. The goal during Week 3 is to grab hold of the joy that was promised to us in Jesus.

Candle Lighting

Have someone light the first then the second and third candles of Advent. The third flame shines as a warm reminder of the presence of joy, that warms the cold and lights the dark.

Have two people each read one of the Scriptures:

“And the angel said to them, ‘Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.’” Luke 2v10-11

“You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy.” Psalm 16v11

Discussion

  • What are some common attitudes about joy and happiness, whether in the world or in the church?

  • What is God’s perspective on our joy and happiness?

Practice

Take five minutes of silent time to yourselves. Write down three things that brought you joy recently. Reflect on how they point back to God. Write down your thoughts.

Reflection Questions

1. When have you experienced God’s joy in an unexpected way? If you’re able, share some of what you wrote down.

2. What would it look like to share joy with others during this Advent season?

Close with Final Prayer

“Lord Jesus, whose coming brings joy to the world, help us to find our delight in you. May your joy strengthen us in trials and overflow from us to others. Amen.” (Adapted from the Book of Common Prayer)

Keep the Candles lit until everyone leaves
